- The organic compound citrulline is an
α-amino acid. Its name is derived from citrullus, theLatin word for
watermelon
- It is a key intermediate in the urea
cycle, the pathway by which mammals excrete ammonia.
- Biosynthesis :- Citrulline is
made from ornithine and carbamoyl phosphate in one of the central
reactions in the urea cycle. It is also produced from arginine as a
by-product of the reaction catalyzed by NOS family.Arginine is first
oxidized into N-hydroxyl-arginine, which is then further oxidized to
citrulline concomitant with release of nitric oxide.
- Sources :- Citrulline is found
naturally in many common foods. The best way to get the proper
amount of citrulline and other nutrients your body needs is by
eating a balanced diet of meat, vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
- Generally, foods rich in citrulline
are those high in protein including eggs, meat, fish, legumes, milk
products and watermelon rinds (small amount in the meat).
- The rind of watermelon (Citrullus
lanatus) is a good natural source of citrulline.
- In recent studies, citrulline has been
found to relax blood vessels. Circulating citrulline concentration
is, in humans, a biomarker of intestinal functionality.
- Citrulline Health Benefits :-
1. Citrulline is essential for maintaining the correct nitrogen
level.
2. It regulates important metabolic processes.
3. It helps maintain the acid-base balance in the body.
4. It strengthens your immune system and thus improves your overall
health.
5. Citrulline helps boost energy and helps avoid muscle fatigue.
6. Citrulline promotes the production of insulin, creatine and the
growth hormone.
7. Citrulline helps remove ammonia from the muscle cells and liver.
Ammonia is a waste product. Citrulline thus acts as a detoxifying
agent.
- Functional Use :-
L Citrulline is an amino acid that converts to L-arginine and then
nitric oxide in your bloodstream. Nitric oxide is involved in
vasodilation (or simply put, dilation of the blood vessels); low
levels have been associated with mental and physical fatigue and
sexual disorders.
L-Citrulline also promotes healthier skin and immune functions, and
is part of the Urea Cycle — it assists in converting ammonia to urea
in your liver, which offers protection against damage and helps keep
your liver functioning properly.
- Package and Storage:
Citrulline is packed in 25kg drum/bag or according to the customer
demand. Citrulline should be stored in cool and air place.
- Therapeutic Dosages :-
A typical dose of citrulline is 6–18 grams daily. It is commonly
sold in the form of citrulline malate.
