- Dioctyl phthalate is a
thick oil with a high molecular weight, a low vapor pressure, a high
boiling point, and little or no odor.
- Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, commonly abbreviated DEHP, is
an organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO2C8H17)2. This colourless
viscous liquid is soluble in oil, but not in water and it possesses good
plasticizing properties.
- Being produced on a
massive scale by many companies, it has acquired many names and
acronymns, including BEHP, di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, as well as
dioctyl phthalate (DOP).
- Phthalates are produced
by the reaction of phthalic anhydride with appropriate alcohols from
methanol up to isodecanol (C13), either as a straight chain or with some
branched in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid as a
catalyst.
- Results of long time
tests are given for migration of dioctyl phthalate from solid PVC discs
into well-stirred colza oil.
- Dioctyl phthalate
increases the percentage of unsaturated fatty acids and decreases the
cellular HSR sensitivity in yeast cells grown at 25 SC.
- Dioctyl
Phthalate is the most used plasticizer, usually considered one of the
best for plasticizing PVC and many other resins
- Dioctyl phthalate is
used as a vacuum pump oil.
- DOP is the dominant
plasticizer used in PVC, providing low cost.
- Dioctyl phthalate is
also used as a substance in chemical reactions in certain plastic
manufacturing operations, and as a material from which aerosols of
standard-sized particles can be produced.
- Dioctyl phthalate is
widely used to evaluate high-efficiency particulate aerosol (HEPA)
filters.
- DOP is also used to
test in-place HEPA filters on exhaust ventilation and air pollution
control systems. In the past, DOP was used to fit test respirators on
individual workers.
- The demand for 830
million pounds of 2-ethylhexanol, and its use in the manufacture of
plasticizers, 48% of 2-ethylhexanol is used in the manufacture of
plasticizers, of which 60% are dioctyl phthalates, it is projected that
241 million pounds of dioctyl phthalates were produced in the
United
States in later period.
- Import quantities of
dioctyl phthalates were about 4 million pounds in past years.
