- Fluconazole is a
triazole antifungal drug used in the treatment and prevention of
superficial and systemic fungal infections.
- It appears as a
white crystalline powder, and it is very slightly soluble in water and
it is also soluble in alcohol.
- Fluconazole is a
drug belonging to the class of anti fungals called triazoles.
- Fluconazole is well
absorbed orally with or without food.
- It is used for
treating various fungal infections in different parts of the body,
including yeast infections of the vagina, mouth, throat, esophagus ,
abdomen , lungs.
- Fluconazole may
increase the concentration of these drugs and enhance their effect:
Warfarin , Antidiabetic sulphonylurea medication (tolbutamide,
glibenclamide, gliclazide, glipizide., Phenytoin, Theophylline,
Ciclosporin, Celecoxib.
- Fluconazole is also
used to prevent yeast infections in patients who are likely to become
infected because they are being treated with chemotherapy or radiation
therapy before a bone marrow transplant.
- Fluconazole is also
sometimes used to prevent fungal infections in people who are likely to
become infected because they have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or
cancer or have had a transplant operation .
- Fluconazole
(Diflucan) is a synthetic antifungal agent which can be used for the
treatment of a variety of Candida albicans infections.
- Fluconazole has also
been effective in the treatment of fungal septicemia in the neonatal
population.
- Fluconazole is a
widely used bis-triazole antifungal agent. As with other triazoles, it
has five-membered ring structures containing three nitrogen atoms. It is
marketed as DiflucanŽ by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Both oral and
intravenous formulations of fluconazole are available.
- As with all azole
antifungal agents, fluconazole works principally by inhibition of
cytochrome P450 14a-demethylase.
- Fluconazole is also
sometimes used to treat serious fungal infections that begin in the
lungs and can spread through the body and fungal infections of the eye,
prostate (a male reproductive organ), skin and nails.
