- Labetalol Hydrochloride is an
adrenergic receptor blocking agent that has both selective alpha1-
and nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking actions in a
single substance.
- Labetalol Hydrochloride is a
racemate, chemically designated as
5-[1-hydroxy-2-[(1-methyl-3-phenylpropyl) amino] ethyl] salicylamide
monohydrochloride.
- Labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate,
fixed combination with hydrochlorothiazide: Normozyde) is a mixed
alpha/beta adrenergic
antagonist, which is used to treat high blood pressure.
- Labetalol HCl is a white or
off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water.
- Labetalol Hydrochloride Injection
is used to lower high blood pressure, also
called hypertension.
- Labetalol Hydrochloride has a
particular indication in the treatment of pregnancy-induced
hypertension which is commonly associated with pre-eclampsia.
- Labetalol Hydrochloride is also
used to treat chronic and acute hypertension of pheochromocytoma and
hypertensive crisis.
- Labetalol blocks beta receptors
that are found in the heart. This reduces the action of adrenaline
and noradrenaline on the heart, causing it to beat more slowly and
with less force. In turn, this reduces the pressure at which the
blood is pumped out of the heart and around the body, which helps to
reduce blood pressure.
- Labetalol's action in slowing the
rate and force of the heartbeat also reduces the energy used by the
heart to pump blood
around the body. This reduces the heart's need for oxygen, which
means that labetalol can also be used in the management of
angina. Angina is chest pain that occurs because the heart does not
get enough oxygen to meet demand, for example during exercise.
- Labetalol HCl Injection is
contraindicated in bronchial asthma, overt cardiac failure, greater
than first degree heart block, cardiogenic shock, severe bradycardia,
other conditions associated with severe and prolonged hypotension.
- Labetalol is considered a
pregnancy Category C medicine by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), which means that it might not be safe for use
during pregnancy, although the full risks are currently unknown.
- Labetalol was quicker and more
efficient at controlling blood pressure, having a beneficial effect
on renal functions and causing fewer side effects compared with
methyldopa.
