- Polyphosphazenes are a
class of inorganic polymers with the repeat unit (-RR'P=N-). The
substituents R,R' are usually alkoxy, amino, (R2N), or halogens
(such as chloride or fluoride).
- Polyphosphazenes are
typically prepared by the thermal ring-opening polymerization of
hexachlorophosphazene (Cl2PN)3 followed by esterification of the
intermediate poly(dichlorophosphazene) with either amines or sodium
salts of alcohols.
- Most polyphosphazenes
are colorless and exhibit high thermal stability, although they are
somewhat sensitive to base hydrolysis.
- Polyphosphazenes
containing polyether side chains are good ionic conductors for
lithium triflate. They are among the few polymers that will dissolve
such salts.
- Polyphosphazene is
currently the highest performing membrane material for Methanol
based Proton-Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells. This fuel cell type
is ideal for miniature power supply and is a leading candidate for
automotive applications.
- Medical applications
include: Drug Delivery, Biological Membranes, Coatings, and
polymeric medical devices and components such as prosthetics and
implants.
- Polyphosphazenes are
used as flame retardants, additives, performance polymers, and in
specialty applications.
- Polyphosphazenes are
being used to make membranes more thermally, mechanically, and
chemically stable, as well as to enhance selectivity and overall
performance. They are mainly used in electrodialysis,
microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis applications.
- These are hybrid
organic-inorganic polymers that have a backbone comprised of
phosphorus and nitrogen atoms with althernating double and single
bonds.
- Polyphosphazene based
electrolytes containing different iodide salts were studied as
components of dye-sensitized solar cell.
- Polyphosphazenes
bearing cationic moieties were synthesized from
poly(dichloro)phosphazene, which in turn was obtained by thermal
polymerization of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene in
1,2,4-trichlorobenzene.
- Linear polyphosphazene
polymers by direct synthesis under anhydrous conditions from NH4Cl
and at least one chlorphosporous compound selected from the group
consisting of XPCl4 or X2POI3 where X is one or more substitutents.
