- Propoxur is an
insecticide.
- It is a white
crystalline powder with a faint characteristic odour and a melting point
of 86-91.5°C.
- Propoxur, known by the
trade name Baygon™, is a component of a considerable number of
registered products.
- Technical propoxur has
a vapor pressure of 0.01 mmHg.
- Propoxur is one of the
chemicals that have, to a large extent, replaced DDT in the control of
black flies and mosquitoes
- In the environment,
propoxur is subject to degradation via hydrolysis and microbial
action.
- Propoxur is not used on
food crops. It is used against mosquitoes in outdoor areas, for flies in
agricultural settings, for fleas and ticks on pets, as an acaricide, on
lawns and turf for ants, on flowering plants, and in private dwellings
and public buildings.
- A non-specific poison,
propoxur
is highly toxic to non-target, beneficial species such as
bees and is of very high toxicity to crustaceans, fish, aquatic insects,
and aquatic worms.
- Propoxur is broken down
and excreted rapidly in urine.
- A Simple
spectrophotometric method used for the determination of propoxur.
- A continuous wavelet
transform (CWT) followed by a principal component regression (PCR) and
partial least squares (PLS) were applied for the quantitative
determination of Propoxur.
- HPLC with on-line
reaction and fluorometric detection method determines both propoxur and
its metabolite 2-hydroxypropoxur (2-OH-propoxur).
