- Salbutamol (INN) or albuterol (USAN)
is a short-acting β2-adrenergic receptor agonist used for the relief
of bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease.
- It is marketed as Ventolin among
other brand names.
- Salbutamol was the first
selective β2-receptor agonist to be marketed — in 1968.
- It was first sold by Allen &
Hanburys under the brand name Ventolin.
- The drug was an instant success,
and has been used for the treatment of asthma ever since.
- Salbutamol sulfate is usually
given by the inhaled route for direct effect on bronchial smooth
muscle.
- This is usually achieved through
a metered dose inhaler (MDI), nebulizer or other proprietary
delivery devices (e.g. Rotahaler or Autohaler).
- In these forms of delivery, the
maximal effect of salbutamol can take place within five to twenty
minutes of dosing, though some relief is immediately seen.
- It can also be given orally as an
inhalant or intravenously.
- Salamol is, like Ventolin, a
brand of salbutamol and is bioequivalent.
- Salamol is also widely used
internationally, having been approved in the United States and the
United Kingdom.
- In the United Kingdom,
Salamol has been registered and prescribed for over four years and
has a significant share of the salbutamol market there, with over
600,000 units being dispensed each month.
- There is nothing to compare this
product’s introduction with fenoterol’s safety concerns.
- The usual dose to relieve asthma
symptoms is 1 to 2 inhalations (also called "puffs") for people 12
years of age and older, and 1 puff for children 6 to 11 years of
age.
- It is not known if the response
to higher doses of nebulised beta-agonists
or other bronchodilators is impaired.
- We assessed the effect of
long-acting beta-agonist treatment on the response to 5 mg nebulised
salbutamol and to ipratropium bromide.
- The response to nebulised
salbutamol was 15% lower after formoterol therapy compared to
placebo (95% confidence 5 to 25%, p = 0.008).
- Patients using long-acting
beta-agonists may respond less well to emergency beta-agonist
treatment.
- Additional treatment with an
alternative bronchodilator should be considered early in the course
of an exacerbation
