- Transparent alumina is known as
aluminum oxynitride
- It is a
transparent polycrystalline ceramic with a cubic spinel crystal
structure made of nitrogen, oxygen and aluminum.

Aluminium OxyNitride remains solid up to
1200°C (2190°F). It has good corrosion resistance and resistance to
damage from radiation and oxidation. It is about three times harder than
steel of the same thickness

Aluminium Oxynitride, a aluminium that is
a 80% transparent material but still 4 times harder than glass

The potential candidates for transparent
application include Aluminium oxynitride, Magnesium-Aluminate spinel,
Silicate glasses and Sapphire

Rods and plates, Domes, tubes, transparent windows are produced from
this material using conventional ceramic powder processing methods ;
also Various defense applications like Recce sensor windows, transparent
armor, windows for laser communications and specialty domes with
different shapes that include hemispherical and hyper-hemispherical
domes

under the name ALON by Surmet Corporation

Aluminum nitride ceramics has a
sufficiently high thermal conductivity; However, its sintering
temperature is rather high (above 2000 ºC), which increases
substantially processing costs
