- Vinyl acetate, also
known as VAM for vinyl acetate monomer, has the chemical formula
CH3COOCH=CH2 and is a colorless liquid with a sweet flavor. Systematic
names include 1-acetoxyethylene and acetic acid ethenyl ester.
- The usual method of
preparation is by reaction of ethylene and acetic acid with oxygen and a
palladium catalyst. It can be polymerized, either by itself to make
polyvinyl acetate or with other monomers to prepare copolymers such as
ethylene-vinyl acetate. Vinyl Acetate is miscible with organic solvents
such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones and esters. It is miscible with
water at 20°C in the composition ranges 0-2% mass and 99-100%
mass.
- Vinyl acetate monomer
is a chemical building block used to manufacture a wide variety of
polymers including: polyvinyl acetate; polyvinyl alcohol; polyvinyl
acetals; ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers; and, ethylene vinyl
alcohol.
- Several processes are
used to manufacture Vinyl acetate commerically. These include:
Acetic
acid addition to acetylene Acetic acid addition to ethylene Acetic
anhydride-acetaldehyde reaction
- Addition of acetic acid
to acetylene is the oldest manufacturing process and is still used.
Oxidative addition of acetic acid to ethylene in the presence of a
palladium catalyst is the most widely used method for vinyl acetate
manufacture. Both the liquid phase and vapour phase processes are used.
- A new process to
manufacture Viny Acetate Monomer could offer capital cost savings of
upto 30%, reports BP Chemicals (UK). Dubbed `leap', the process replaces
the fixed bed reactors currently in use with a more efficient fluidised
bed system. Existing plants can be retrofitted and
debottlenecked.
- Vinyl acetate is used
in the production of various polymers and copolymers used in the
commercial production of different adhesives, laminate films and paints.
The synthesis of vinyl acetate is typically carried out via the
oxyacetylation of ethylene over Pd/Au supported
over silica.VAM
should continue to grow at about 1.9 percent per
- VEOVA Monomers are
mainly used with vinyl acetate and acrylate monomers in the production
of polymeric binders for coatings and for cement mortar additives. These
are usually water-based, but solvent-borne VEOVA based polymers and
powders can also be produced.
- VEOVA copolymerises
readily and randomly with vinyl acetate at high steadystate conversion
levels. Batch reproducibility is good, reactor fouling is minimal and
hence, cleaning costs and down-time are low. VEOVA latices are easily
formulated into emulsion paints because of their good shear stability
and compatibility with other raw materials. The shelf life of VEOVA
based emulsion paints is very good, because of good hydrolytic
stability, resulting in low pH and low viscosity drift.
- DuPont recently signed
definitive agreements with the Saudi International Petrochemical Company
(Sipchem) to license DuPont technology for a new vinyl acetate monomer
(VAM) manufacturing plant to be located in the Jubail Industrial City,
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. DuPont will provide its VAM technology under
license and provide technical assistance for the Sipchem VAM
facility.
- Demand for VAM weakened
greatly in 2001 in concert with the weakened US economy, as most VAM end
markets (adhesives, paints, paper, and textiles) are directly effected
by the general economic conditions. Run away natural gas cost have
caused sharp rises in prices of acetic acid and ethylene over the past
two years. Consequently, current margins cannot justify reinvestment
within the near future. Any capacity additions in the US are more likely
to be through debottlenecking rather than via new greenfield
projects.
