- Acetone is also known as
propanone, dimethyl ketone, 2-propanone, propan-2-one and ß-ketopropane.
It is the simplest representative of the ketones.
- It is widely used as a
chemical intermediate in the production of methyl isobutyl ketone and
other solvents, and in the production of such important chemicals as
bisphenol A and methyl methacrylate.
- The most familiar household
use of acetone is as the active ingredient in nail polish remover.
Acetone is also used to make plastic, fibers, drugs, and other
chemicals. Before the invention of the cumene process acetone was
produced by the dry distillation of acetates, for example calcium
acetate.
- Bisphenol A is an important
component of many polymers such as polycarbonates, polyurethanes and
epoxy resins. Acetone is also used extensively for the safe transporting
and storing of acetylene.
- The amount of acetone used
annually in the production of other chemicals is increasing.Large
amounts are also used in the production of
methacrylates and
bisphenol A, and in the production of acetone amines.
- Acetone has low toxicity
potential relative to other commonly used industrial solvents.Did not
cause cancer in long-term animal studies.
- Cumene is the principal
chemical used in the production of phenol and its coproduct, acetone,
via the chemical intermediate cumene hydroperoxide. It is also used as a
starting material in the production of acetophenone.
- Acetophenone is also
extracted from the production stream and marketed in a commercial
quality of 98 % and 99 % purity. It is a basic raw material in
hydrocarbon resins for the production of adhesives and printing inks.
Acetophenone is also a precursor to certain agrochemicals.
- Things will be very
different by 2008 or 2009. Several new large styrene investments will
come on-stream in both the Middle East and in China. This could back-out
styrene exports from the United States, reducing production
there.
- During 2004~2006, the
industry enjoyed another fast development. Capacity increased rapidly,
and so did output. With an annual growth of 26% from 2003 to 2004,
Chinese acetone output is anticipated to hit 333.8kt in 2005, up by
48.3% from a year ago level.
- In 2005, Chinese acetone
capacity will rise by 110kt/yr to 392kt/yr due to the start-up of new
units and capacity expansion of existing units. Meanwhile, domestic
demand has seen rapid growth. With an annual growth of 16-18% in past
years, Chinese apparent demand is anticipated to reach 538kt in 2005.
- We estimate that global
acetone supply will remain roughly balanced with demand this year. By
2006, we expect supply to exceed demand by about 100 thousand tons. Five
years later, this imbalance may double.
