- Metal injection moulding (MIM) is a near net-shape technique
suitable for the production of moderate to large volumes of small
complex metal products
- MIM combines the plastics injection moulding technique with the
powder sintering techniques to produce high density parts at close
tolerances
- PM components made from aluminum alloy powders
offer a combination of light weight (a third of that of steel),
corrosion resistance, good mechanical and fatigue properties, high
thermal and electrical conductivity, good machinability and the ability
to be finished by a variety of processes
- When transporting metal powders, it must be remembered that a number
of powders are pyrophoric and the pyrophoricity is enhanced as the size
of the powder decreases. It is well known that aluminum powders are
pyrophoric and adequate precautions need to be taken in handling
aluminum powders
- PM cylinders and rotors can be produced
either from steel powder or where weight saving is desirable from a PM
aluminium alloy or PM aluminium metal matrix composite
