- The genus Citrus belongs to the Rutaceae or Rue
family, sub-family Aurantoideae.
- This family contains 140 genera and 1300 species
distributed throughout the world.
- Citrus oils, also called
agrumen oils. It
obtained from citrus fruits like bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, lime,
mandarin and bitter orange.
- A fragrant oil with strong solvent properties,
distilled from the skins of citrus fruit such as oranges or
lemons.
- Citrus oil contains a number of compounds,
including limonene and linalool, which are useful as
insecticides.
- Citrus oil is frequently used in flea sprays and
shampoos
- An herbal extract that typically contains 85%
d-limonene as active components; historically used as a phytonutrient
and anticarcinogenic
- The fruit of the bergamot tree, an inedible hybrid
of bitter orange and lemon, is cultivated in California,
Spain, South
Africa and in Calabria in southern Italy
- The rise in citrus production is mainly due to the
increase in cultivation areas, improvements in transportation and
packaging, rising incomes and consumer preference for healthy
foods
- Citrus is hand harvested, whether processed or
marketed fresh.
- Citrus may be stored for periods of up to 1-2
months at low temperatures.
- The cleaner production initiative that Original
Juice has implemented is based around recovery of the citrus oil and
sugars from the
liquid pressings.
- Analysis of the world fresh citrus trade reveals strong growth, with the quantities traded
increasing from 5.5 million to approximately 9.6 million tonnes

and processed citrus markets, except for high tariffs on citrus that
make domestic sale more profitable.
