Food Products Industry in
India is one of the largest in terms of production, consumption, export
and growth prospects. The government has accorded it a high priority,
with a number of fiscal reliefs and incentives, to encourage
commercialization and value addition to agricultural produce; for
minimizing pre/post harvest wastage, generating employment and export
growth.

Primary food processing
is a major industry with lakhs of rice-mills/hullers, flour mills, pulse
mills and oil-seed mills. There are several thousands of bakeries,
traditional food units and fruit/veg./spice processing units

food processing industries are:- Fruit & Vegetable Processing,
Fish-processing, Milk Processing, Meat & Poultry Processing,
Packaged/Convenience Foods, Alcoholic beverages & Soft drinks and Grain

Indian Processed food
exports were at over Rs.13,500 crores (US $ 3.2 billion ) in 1998-99.
Out of these exports, rice accounted for 46%, whereas marine products
accounted for over 34% - according to Ministry of Food Processing

FAO’s forecast for world
cereal utilization in 2004/05 has been raised to 2 004 million tonnes,
20 million tonnes more than forecast in September, reflecting
the indications of much higher supplies than anticipated
earlier.

The FAO trade-weighted
meat price index rose in mid- 2004 to an eight-year high as market
closures due to animal disease and food safety.

The FAO price index
(1990-92=100) for dairy products stood at 156 in November, which was 26
percent above the same month last year, and the highest since 1990 when
the index was first computed.

Global milk output is
estimated to grow by about 1.9 percent in 2004 compared to only 1.1
percent in 2003.

Price index for oilseeds
reached a high of 157 in April 2004, but then started to fall and
by October was down by almost one third, at 104.

FAO’s forecast indicate
that in 2005 world sugar consumption would slightly surpass
global production for the second consecutive year.

Global sugar consumption
is estimated by FAO to increase by 1.6 million tonnes in 2004/05,
from the level of 143.2 million in 2003/04.

In 2001, total imports by
EU member countries of fresh fruit amounted to more than € 14.4 billion,
representing an increase of 9 percent since 1999.
-
A total of nearly €
22.3 billion of fresh fruit and vegetables was imported by EU member
countries in 2001, whereas exports amounted to € 17.8 billion in the
same year.
