Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • Phosphatic clay are Very small particles that are separated from phosphate ore less than 140 mesh. It consists of a mixture of very fine phosphate
rock particles and naturallyoccurring clay minerals it can be Concentrated but not created or chemically altered by processing of ore.
  • The phosphatic clay resource is a by-product of phosphate mining in central Florida. This resource currently occupies approximately 100,000 acres.
  • The clay in the ponds came out of the ground as part of the matrix, which naturally contains the radioactive elements uranium and radium. Some of this radioactivity ends up going to the clay ponds.
  • Phosphatic clay sediment in the ponds have a higher level of radioactivity than sediment in natural lakes, but the water is like other lake water. When the pond settles the soil has higher levels of radioactivity than normal soil.
  • Characteristics of Phosphatic Clay are (i) Very high fertility (ii) Very high retention capacity for moisture and applied nutrients (iii) Drainage can be a problem (iv) Tillage characteristics similar to other heavy clay soils.
  • Reclaimed soils and phosphatic clays can successfully produce agricultural crops. In many instances water retention are better in reclaimed versus
    native soils.
  • A 2 to 3 year cropping system consisting of legumes or other green manure crops augments organic matter and physical characteristics of the soil.
  • Two primary factors can be addressed by the grower before tillage of phosphatic clay. The primary factor controlling clod size is soil moisture within the depth of soil to be tilled. Wetter soil conditions will result in larger clods. Dryer soil conditions during tillage will produce smaller clods. In
the case of phosphatic clay, soil moisture should be a major consideration in deciding if and when to till.
  • Phosphatic clay, a waste by-product of the phosphate mining industry, used as an effective sorbent for Pb from aqueous effluents. The major
parameters controlling aqueous Pb removal, viz. initial metal ion concentrations, solution pH, sorbent amounts, ionic strength and presence of both inorganic and organic ligands were evaluated using batch experiments.
  • Florida is the largest domestic producer of phosphates.
