- Polycrystalline silicon, also
called polysilicon, is a material consisting of small silicon
crystals.
- It differs from single-crystal
silicon, used for electronics and solar cells, and from amorphous
silicon, used for thin film devices and solar cells.
- Polycrystalline and
paracrystalline phases (see Polycrystal) are composed of a number of
smaller crystals or crystallites.
- Polycrystalline silicon (or
semicrystalline silicon, polysilicon, poly-Si, or simply "poly") is
a material consisting of multiple small silicon crystals.
- Polycrystalline cells can be
recognized by a visible grain, a “metal flake effect”.
- Polysilicon is a key component
for integrated circuit and central processing unit manufacturers
such as AMD and Intel.
- At the component level,
polysilicon has long been used as the conducting gate material in
MOSFET and CMOS processing technologies.
- Polysilicon manufacturing market
is in a very fast growth mode.
- According to Digitimes in July
2011, the total polysilicon production in 2010 was 209,000 tons and
first-tier suppliers account for 64% of the market while China-based
polysilicon firms have 30% of market share.
- The total production is likely to
increase 37.4% to 281,000 tons by end of 2011.
- The Hemlock Semiconductor Group,
which includes two Dow Corning Corporation joint ventures, Hemlock
Semiconductor Group and Hemlock Semiconductor LLC, will invest up to
$3.0 billion to expand polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon)
production, a key raw material used to manufacture solar cells and
semiconductor devices.
- By 2015, the joint ventures will
have increased polysilicon manufacturing capacity by up to 10 times
over that 10-year span.
- In 2009, the global
polycrystalline silicon production capacity increased by atleast 65%
and China recorded the highest production ramp up of a huge 300%
over the previous year.
- More than 98% of
semiconductor-grade polysilicon is produced by the
trichlorosilane (SiHCl3) distillation and reduction method.
- For crystal-growth feedstock, the
c-Si PV industry has been relying on waste material from the
semiconductor Si industry and on secondary polysilicon, the excess
or rejected material from electronic-grade polysilicon production.
