Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • 1,4-Butanediol colorless viscous liquid is derived from butane by placement of alcohol groups at each end of the chain. It is one of four stable isomers of butanediol.
  • 1,4-Butanediol is used industrially as a solvent and in the manufacture of some types of plastics, elastic fibers and polyurethanes.
  • 1,4-butanediol is used for the synthesis of γ-butyrolactone (GBL).
  • At about 200 °C in the presence of soluble rutheniumcatalysts, the diol undergoes dehydrogenation to form butyrolactone.
  • World production of 1,4-butanediol is about one million metric tons per year and market price is about 2,000 USD (1,600 EUR) per ton (2005). Almost half of it is dehydrated to tetrahydrofuranto make fibers such as Spandex. The largest producer is BASF.
  • It is also used as a recreational drug known by some users as "One Comma Four", "One Four Bee" or "One Four B-D-O". It exerts effects similar to γ-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), which is a metabolic product of 1,4-butanediol.
  • They Are Used In The Application Of Adhesives
    Agricultural, Coatings, Pharmaceuticals, Plasticizers
    Polyurethanes
  • They Are Used In The Manufacture Of Polyurethanes,
    Polybutyleneterephthalate
  • The main applications for butanediol are the production of cellular plastics, thermoplastic polyesters And hot-melt adhesives.
  • In the textile industry, 1,4-butanediol is an additive in sizes and finishing baths. Similar to glycerol, it acts as a plasticizer for water-soluble binders. Plasticized products are less tacky in a humid atmosphere than those treated with glycerol because 1,4-butanediol is not as hygroscopic.
  • 1,4-Butanediol is a colorless and almost odorless liquid. This hygroscopic diol is soluble in water, alcohols, esters, ketones, glycol ethers and glycol ether acetates; immiscible in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and diethylether.
  • 1,4-Butanediol is not a skin irritant, but may be irritating to mucous membranes or the respiratory tract.
  • Vapors may irritate the eyes. If severe, iritis, conjunctivitis or diffuse corneal opacity may result. Proper respiratory
    and protective eyewear are recommended
  • Butanediol is the ethynylation product of acetylene and formaldehyde; a bifunctional, primary alcohol.
