- 1,3-Butadiene is a
colorless, non-corrosive gas with mild aromatic or gasoline-like odor
with the boiling point of –4.4° C at atmospheric pressure and liquid
density of 611 Kg/m3 at 20°C. 1,3-Butadiene is a simple conjugated diene.
- Butadiene is a key
raw material for the manufacture of synthetic rubbers such as
chloroprene rubber, nitrite rubber, polybutadiene rubber and styrene
butadiene rubber.
- 1,3-Butadiene is used
primarily as a monomer to manufacture many different types of polymers
and copolymers and as a chemical intermediate to produce a number of
important industrial chemicals.
-
The major source of
butadiene is as a byproduct in the steam cracking of naphtha and
gas oil to make ethylene and propylene. The butadiene is extracted from
the C4 cracker stream using extractive distillation where the butadiene
is dissolved in an aqueous solution of a solvent and withdrawn from the
bottom of a distillation column. In a second column, butadiene is
separated from the solvent before final purification
- The other process is
Industrial production of butadiene from ethanol at temperature of
400–450°C in the presence of a catalyst with both dehydration and
dehydrogenation processes
