- Liquor made in
India is categorized as beer, country liquor and Indian Made
Foreign Liquor (IMFL).
- Country liquor is
made from a variety of raw materials and has different names in
different parts of the country.
- Indian Made
Foreign Liquor, often abbreviated IMFL, is a term used to denote
western-style hard liquors such as whisky, rum, vodka,
etc., which are manufactured in India.
- It is used to
differentiate them from indigenous recipes such as fenny, toddy,
and arrack, which
are collectively called country liquor.
- Country
liquor, the cheapest form of alcoholic beverages, could soon
give consumers a different kind of kick.
- Some locally
available fruit fly lures such as molasses, sugar, country
liquor, fresh date palm juice and fermented date palm juice were
included as ‘bait components’ of the bait admixtures.
- India’s country
liquor (or arrack) industry, a commoditised and often chaotic
business, is estimated at Rs 22,000 crore, with annualised
volume sales of over 200 million cases.
- At one point, the
country liquor market was projected at 2.5 times that of the
more visible and heavily branded IMFL industry, but has been
yielding ground to the latter rapidly in recent years.
- Country liquor
continues to go strong in northern States like Uttar Pradesh,
Haryana and Punjab, while Maharashtra is one of the bigger
States in the west.
- The standard
characteristics of country liquor vary with the States, with its
alcohol strength in Maharashtra at 42.8% like IMFL, but 36% in
Uttar Pradesh where the purchasing power of the mass consumer is
believed to be lower.
- Country liquor, an
unbranded, highly potent alcohol drink is produced by
distilleries and sold through separate distribution channels.
- There is also a
thriving market for illicitly made country liquor.
- The ratio of IMFL
consumers to country liquor consumers would be around 1:5.
- With the ban on
country liquor, some consumers move into the IMFL segment,
expanding the market.
- In India, country
liquor and IMFL cater for two quite different sectors of the
liquor market.
- Country liquor is
consumed in rural areas and by low-income groups in urban areas.
- India imported
12x70cl liquor worth USD 435,512 with total quantity of 55,350.
France is the largest supplier of 12x70cl liquor accounting for
imports worth USD 343,216 followed by United Kingdom and United
Arab Emirates which exported 12x70cl liquor worth USD 76,424 and
USD 14,191 respectively.
- The country liquor
market is regional market with small manufacturers spread across
the country but is estimated to be around 2.5 times the IMFL
market.
