Project at a Glance Contents on the CD ROM
  • Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical technique used in procedures such as tubal ligation, gallbladder removal or hiatal hernia repair.
  • Laparoscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia; however it can be performed with other types of anesthesia that permit the patient to remain awake.
  • Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows your surgeon to view (and in some cases, perform surgery on) the organs in your abdomen, such as the intestines, stomach, and gallbladder, and in women, pelvic organs, such as the ovaries.
  • Laparoscopical surgery is not as aggressive and does not make the postoperatory as painful.
  • The laparoscope is placed in an incision in the belly button in order to see. Other incisions may also be made for lasers and instruments for major surgery.
  • Laparoscopic surgery includes operations within the abdominal or pelvic cavities, whereas keyhole surgery performed on the thoracic or chest cavity is called thoracoscopic surgery.
  •  The procedure has undergone rapid development in recent years, thanks to the efforts of both European and American surgeons and endoscopists.
  • There are two types of laparoscope: (1) a telescopic rod lens system, that is usually connected to a video camera (single chip or three chip), or (2) a
digital laparoscope where the charge-coupled device is placed at the end of the laparoscope, eliminating the rod lens system.
  • The potential benefits of laparoscopic surgery include the reduction of postoperative morbidity and pain, less compromise of gastrointestinal function and earlier return to a normal socio-professional activity.
