Information profile @ a Glance
- Natural sand is a product of many thousands of years of erosion
- Experiencing a global shortage of natural sand, and environmental
pressures, costs and a shortage has necessitated the manufacture of sand
from quarried material
- Manufactured sand, also called artificial sand, is being
successfully used in the production of high quality concrete and asphalt
around the world. Its superior shape puts it well within specifications
imposed on sand for use in concrete production
- Sand manufactured by Vertical Shaft Impactor is of cubical shape.
Such sand can be used for all types of
construction work, Concreting, Plastering etc and is better substitute
to river sand
- The crushers most successful at
producing non-flaky aggregates are
autogenous (rock on rock) and
vertical-shaft impactors
- Builders say Maharashtra alone requires close to 50000 sand trucks
for construction purpose daily for more than 30 infrastructure projects
and 3000 housing projects in Mumbai
- Extracting sand from the sea could lead to future erosion but use of
aggregate rock to make M-sand available is a viable option. This
material is extensively used in states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra
Pradesh
- Unbridled urbanization fuelling the growth of construction industry
had resulted in excessive mining of sand and this was likely to increase
in the years ahead, and sand as a freely available natural resource, may
become totally depleted by 2050
- The ban on sand quarrying due to its environmental hazards
would result in scarcity of the natural material leading to escalation
of the construction cost in future
- There is no doubt about the prospects of manufactured / artificial
sand in the days to come
