- Arecanut or betel
nut or supari (Areca catechu) is an important member of the
family Araceae. It is chewed, both as raw nut and after
processing.
- Supari is a palm
tree grown extensively in India, mainly for the production of
betel nut and for the purpose of the wood for specific building
purposes.
- Many varieties of
scented suparis are now prepared by blending the dried, broken
bits of arecanut with flavoured mixtures and packed.
Cultivation of supari palm for nut is an age-old practice.
- Supari palms
generally bear fruit at seven or eight years of age.
- In India, the
largest consumer of areca nut and Pakistan the preparation of
nut with or without betel leaf is commonly referred to as paan.
- It is available
practically everywhere and is sold in ready-to-chew pouches
called "Pan Masala" or supari, as a mixture of many flavors
whose primary base is areca nut crushed into small pieces.
- Pan Masala with a
small quantity of tobacco is called gutka. The easily-discarded
small plastic supari or gutka pouches are an ubiquitous
pollutant of the South Asian environment.
- The Shimoga
District in Karnataka is presently the largest producer of
betelnut in India.
- Suparitree (Areca
catechu L.) is commercially the most important palm grown in
India, Burma and Bangladesh.
- Average rate of
supari production for the study area was 3.8 yielding about
57,359 pons raw supari per year.
- Most of the supari
is used for making tari (dried supari); it takes 1.5 pons to
produce 1 kg of tari.
- Raw supari
(matured) and tari are the principal products for market.
from September to December.
