- The chemical
compound acrylamide (acrylic amide) has the chemical formula
C3H5NO.
- Its IUPAC name is
2-propenamide.
- Acrylamide is a
white odourless crystalline solid, soluble in water, ethanol, ether and
chloroform.
- Acrylamide is
incompatible with acids, bases, oxidizing agents, iron and iron salts.
- It decomposes
non-thermally to form ammonia and thermal decomposition produces carbon
monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen.
- Acrylamide also has
many other uses in the modern molecular biology laboratory, including
the use of linear polyacrylamide (LPA) as a carrier.
- LPA aids in the
precipitation of small amounts of DNA. Many laboratory supply companies
sell LPA as a commercial product.
- Most acrylamide is
used to synthesize polyacrylamides which find many uses as water-soluble
thickeners.
- Acrylamide is used
in the manufacture of dyes and the manufacture of other
monomers.
- Polyacrylamide
(PAAm) gel is one of the most popular gels in the field of protein
separation or medical applications.
- Polyacrylamide
particles containing nanosized magnetic iron oxide were prepared via
inverse miniemulsion polymerization.
- Inverse miniemulsion
polymerization was adopted to synthesize the magnetic polyacrylamide
particles using small molecular emulsifier.
- The current industry
or government accepted method for acrylamide is based on LC/MS/MS (high
performance liquid chromatography/tandem
mass
spectrometry).
- Thermal
polymerization of acrylamide was studied by differential scanning
calorimetry.
- Acrylamide is a
large volume industrial chemical used mainly in the manufacture of
water-soluble polymers.
- This widespread
public exposure to acrylamide was taken as a concern by competent
authorities worldwide.
