Information profile @ a Glance
- Hydrogels are defined as polymeric networks which are able to absorb
large amounts of water
Some hydrogels can absorb and hold up to 1000 times their weight in
water.
- The dried hydrogel is called Xerogel ; hydrogel is already swollen
in water If water is removed without disturbing the polymeric network,
either by lyophilisation or by extraction with organic solvents, then
the remaining material is extremely light and such a dehydrated gel is
called aero gel
- Due to their ability to be heavily modified based on want or need of
function, hydrogels are currently being investigated for use in a large
number of fields, from agriculture to household items, to medical device
and biomedical research.
- Hydrogels can be divided into two categories based on the chemical
or physical nature of the cross-link junctions
- Hydrogels of natural polymers, especially polysaccharides, are in
general, non-toxic and biodegradable
- Many hydrogel based networks have been designed and tailored to meet
the needs of different applications.
- Materials required to make hydrogels are
the acrylamide, bis-acrylamide, Irgacure crosslinker, UV box, photomask
,UV filtering , & acrylic pane
- Preliminary economic study was conducted for a small scale
production unit (18 tons/year) and revealed that the cost of produced
Superabsorbent Hydrogel is about $ 1507 /ton.
