  • Aluminum die casting is a process where molten aluminum alloy is injected into a casting die under high pressure and at a controlled temperature. The mold has two sections, the “cover” half and the “ejector” half.
  • Die casting is the process of forcing molten metal under high pressure into mold cavities (which are machined into dies). Most die castings are made from nonferrous metals, specifically zinc, copper, aluminum, magnesium, lead, and tin based alloys[1], but ferrous metal die castings are possible.
  • Die-casting is similar to permanent mold casting except that the metal is injected into the mold under high pressure of 10-210Mpa (1,450-30,500) psi. This results in a more uniform part, generally good surface finish and good dimensional accuracy, as good as 0.2 % of casting dimension.
  • Casting liquid aluminium alloys into metal moulds using processes such as gravity, low pressure and high pressure die casting is a cost effective means of producing complex shapes that require minimal machining.
  • The most frequent failures of aluminium alloys die-casting dies can generally be divided into four basic groups 1 : heat checking, corner cracking, sharp radii or sharp edges cracking, and cracking due to wear or erosion.
  • Three different types of gating design, finger, tangential and split type with 6 vertical runners, were simulated and the results showed that sound thin-walled die casting was possible with tangential and split type gating design because those gates allowed aluminum melt to flow into the thin cavity uniformly and split type gating system was preferable gating design comparing to tangential type gating system at the point of view of soundness of casting and distortion generated after solidification.

  • This versatile technique is generally used for high-volume production & In the "low pressure" sand casting technique, the melted metal is forced to enter the mould by low pressure difference. This more complicated process allows the production of cast products with thinner wall thickness.
  • Silicon-based aluminum casting alloys are known to be one of the most widely used alloy systems mainly due to their superior casting characteristics and unique combination of mechanical and physical properties.
  • The die casting industry continues to be an important supplier to original equipmentmanufacturers (OEMs) around the world.
    Molten metal processing is inherently energy intensive and roughly 25% of the cost of die-cast products can be traced to some form of energy consumption.
  • The proper selection and maintenance of melting and holding equipment are clearly important factors in minimizing energy consumption in die-casting operations.
