  • A polyamide is a polymer containing monomers of amides joined by peptide bonds.
  • They can occur both naturally and artificially, examples being proteins, such as wool and silk, and can be made artificially through step-growth polymerization or solid-phase synthesis, examples being nylons, aramids, and sodium poly(aspartate).
  • According to composition of their main chain, polyamides are classifieds as aliphatic, semi-aromatic and aromatic. Examples of Aromatic type polyamides :- Paraphenylenediamine  + terephthalic acid
  • Advantages of aromatic polyamides:
    - good mechanical behaviour
    - products can be used within a wide temperature interval
    - good dimensional stability
  • The most common methods for the preparation of aromatic polyamides are the reaction of diacid dichlorides with diamines at low temperatures or direct condensation reactions in solution of aromatic diacids with diamines at high temperatures.
  • The aramids have nowadays found applications in: Heat-protection products; cut-protection products; ballistic-protection products; tires; hoses; transmission belts; friction product; sealing materials (gaskets and braided packings); adhesives, sealant and coatings; specialty paper products; ropes and cables; thermoplastic pipes; aramid-rubber composites; hot gas filtration; composites, membranes, etc.
  • The First Organic Fibre with High Enough Tensile modulus And Strength to be Used As Reinforcement In Advanced Composites Was An Aromatic Polyamide Fibre Or Aramid Fibre
  • Aramid fiber characteristics            good resistance to abrasion, good resistance to organic solvents,
    nonconductive, no melting point, degradation starts from 500°C, low flammability, good fabric integrity at elevated temperatures, sensitive to acids and salts,
    sensitive to ultraviolet radiation
