  • Nonylphenol is an organic compound of the wider family of alkylphenols. It is a product of industrial synthesis formed during the alkylation process of phenols, particularly in the synthesis of polyethoxylate detergents.
  • Nonylphenol is commonly obtained as a mixture of isomers, and is thus usually found as a pale yellow liquid at room temperature with a freezing point of -10°C and a boiling point of 295-320°C.
  • Of alkylphenolic compounds, nonylphenol (NP) and nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) are the most interested endocrine disruptor compounds since they were frequently detected in the streams and in the effluent of sewage treatment plants.
  • Nonyl phenol and the related nonyl phenol ethoxylates are used in pesticide products as inert ingredients and as adjuvants added by the pesticide user.
  • Nonylphenol is used as a catalyst in the curing of epoxy resin.
  • Nonylphenol is mainly used as binders for ink and an intermediate material for production of nonyl phenolethoxylate, which is one of the surfactants used in cleaning agents.
  • It is also used as intermediate of anti-oxidants for rubber.
  • World demand for nonylphenol is 18,200-20,500 tonnes per annum. It is very much governed by demand for nonyl phenolethoxylate, which in
Europe at all events can be expected to diminish.
  • Nonylphenol, and a related compound tert-octylphenol, were first detected as an air pollutant in New York City and New Jersey, probably due to its evaporation from the Hudson river and other smaller rivers in the region that routinely receive municipal wastewaters.
  • The production volume of nonyl phenol in past years was 16,110 tons, of which 6,279 tons was exported, while 1,861 tons was imported. Production has been tending to decrease year by year.
  • Approximately 40% is used in the production of anti-oxidants for rubber, phenol resins used in laminated sheets, the binder for inks, and stabilizers for epoxy resins. NP was formerly used as an additive for plastics, but is not being used for plastics produced in Japan at present.
