- Hydroformylation, also
known as oxo synthesis or oxo process, is an important industrial
process for the production of aldehydes from alkenes.
- The overall mechanism
resembles that for homogeneous hydrogenation with additional steps.
The reaction begins with the generation of coordinatively
unsaturated metal hydrido carbonyl complex such as HCo(CO)3 and
HRh(CO)(PPh3)2. Such species bind alkenes, and the resulting
complex undergoes amigratory insertion reaction to form an alkyl
complex.
- Hydroformylation is
the simultaneous addition of one mole each of hydrogen and carbon
monoxide across a carbon–carbon double bond of alkene to produce
linear and branched aldehydes having one more carbon atom than the
original compound.
- OXO means process by
adding synthesis gas to an olefin to obtain an aldehyde using the
ydroformylation reaction and then hydrogenating the aldehyde to
obtain the alcohol.
- Key oxo alcohols sold
in commerce include t n-Butanol, 2-Ethylhexanol, Isononyl alcohol,
and Isodecyl alcohol.
- n-Butanol is produced
industrially from the petrochemical feedstock propylene. Propylene
is hydroformylated to butyraldehyde (oxo process) in the presence of
a rhodium-based homogeneous catalyst. The butyraldehyde is then
hydrogenated to produce n-butanol.
- The quantity demanded
of n-butyl alcohol in China in 2015 is predicted to be 1,100~1,150
kmt (SRI predicted value is 1,096kmt, generally
consistent). Compared with the production capacity of 1,185kmt/yr
then, the supply and demand are basically balanced.
