- Sodium sulfite
(sodium sulphite) is a soluble compound of sodium.
- Its chemical
formula is Na2SO3.
- It has a
molecular weight of 126.04.
- It is a product of
SO2 scrubbing, a part of the flue gas desulfurization
process.
- Sodium sulfite by
reacting sodium carbonate solution with sulfur dioxide.
- Production of sodium
sulfite begins with the burning of sulfur to form sulfur dioxide, or SO2
gas.
- Generated SO2 gas is
introduced to sodium carbonate liquor in the absorber.
- By controlling the
pH and the operating mode of the crystallizer, sodium sulfite is
produced.
- Coal consumption for
sodium sulfide production is reduced considerably when the optimized
sodium sulfide production process replaces the conventional process and
impacts on the environment from the sulfide would have been reduced by
about 30% if sodium sulfide from an optimized process had been used in
the process.
- Dechlorination of
chlorinated water discharges is accomplished by the addition of tablets
comprised of 90% sodium sulfite to the discharge flow.
- The alkaline sulfide
system is one of these and is essentially a mixture of sodium sulfide
and sodium hydroxide, This is a unique hydrometallurgical system as it
is a very selective lixiviant for the distinct leaching technique of
tin, gold, antimony, arsenic and mercury.
- This method is used
to determine sodium sulfite in a Process ECN-2, ECP-2D, or VNF/RVNP
Color Developer sample.
- The sulfite content
is determined by reacting the sample with excess iodine (liberated from
the reaction of potassium iodine under acidic conditions).
- Sodium sulfite is
primarily used in the pulp and paper industry.
- It is used in water
treatment as an oxygen scavenger agent, in the photographic industry to
protect developer solutions from oxidation and (as hypo clear solution)
to wash fixer (sodium thiosulfate) from film and photo-paper emulsions,
in the textile industry as a bleaching, desulfurizing and dechlorinating
agent and in the leather trade for the sulfitization of tanning
extracts.
- It is used in the
purification of TNT for military use.
- It is used in
chemical manufacturing as a sulfonation and sulfomethylation
agent.
- It is used in the
production of sodium thiosulfate.
- It forms a
bisulfite adduct with aldehydes, and with ketones forms a sulfonic acid.
- It is used to purify
or isolate aldehydes and ketones.
