- Flavonoid refers to
any large group of plant substances that include the anthocyanins.
Anthocyans are water-soluble pigments that are responsible for colors
found in different plants.
- Anthocyans can range
from violet and blue to most shades of red. They can also be found in
tea and red wine and function in the body as antioxidants that invade
cancer cells and interrupt cell growth.
- Flavonoids are also
commonly referred to as bioflavonoids in the media.
- The major flavonoids
found in citrus fruits are diosmin, hesperidin, rutin, naringin,
tangeretin, diosmetin, narirutin, neohesperidin, nobiletin, and
quercetin.
- The basic flavonoid
structure allows a multitude of variations in chemical structure, giving
rise to flavonols (quercetin, kaempherol, myricetin), flavones
(apigenin, luteolin), flavanones (catechin, epicatechin), anthocyanidins
and isoflavonoids (genistein, daidzein).
- The flavonoids occur
in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, flowers, leaves, bark, tea and wine.
The function of polyphenols in plants are antioxidants (protection from
UV light), protection form insects, fungi, viruses and bacteria, visual
attention- pollinator attraction, feed repellent and plant hormone
controllers.
- Flavonoids,
especially quercetin extracted from T. catappa can be added to food
products.Quercetin is considerably stable in lipid systems, stored at
low temperatures and protected from light.
- Due to their activity
as antioxidants, flavonoids found in botanical dietary supplements may
play a role in the prevention of heart disease and cancer.
- Flavonoids are widely
distributed in plants fulfilling many functions including producing
yellow or red/blue pigmentation in flowers and protection from attack by
microbes and insects.
- Consumers and food
manufacturers have become interested in flavonoids for their medicinal
properties, especially their potential role in the prevention of cancers
and cardiovascular disease. The beneficial effects of fruit, vegetables,
and tea or even red wine have been attributed to flavonoid compounds
rather than to known nutrients and vitamins.
- Flavonoids are
reported to have numerous health benefits. They are the natural pigments
in fruits and vegetables.
- Flavonoids aid
circulation, lower cholesterol and prevent and treat cataracts.
Hemorrhoids are reduced using flavonoids.Flavone and quercetin
collectively reduced DNA oxidation.
- Citrus flavonoids
like hesperidin and rutin, taken with at least 1000 mg of Vitamin C, are
also effective in relieving menopausal symptoms such as hot
flashes.
- The
Agricultural Research Service (ARS) under the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) estimates U.S. flavonoid consumption is between 23
mg/d and 1,000 mg/d.
