- A phosphate, in
inorganic chemistry, is a salt of phosphoric acid. In organic chemistry,
a phosphate, or organophosphate, is an ester of phosphoric acid.
Phosphates are important in biochemistry and biogeochemistry. The
phosphate ion is a polyatomic ion with the empirical formula PO43- and a
molar mass of 94.973 g/mol; it consists of one central phosphorus atom
surrounded by four identical oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral
arrangement.
- Phosphates are the
naturally occurring form of the element phosphorus, found in many
phosphate minerals. Elemental phosphorus and phosphides are not found
- Phosphate family
includes Phosphoric Acids
Sodium Phosphates
Calcium Phosphates
Ammonium Phosphates
Potassium Phosphates
Aluminum Phosphates
Magnesium Phosphates
- Phosphates were once
commonly used in laundry detergent in the form trisodium phosphate
, but because of algae boom-bust cycles tied to emission of
phosphates into watersheds, phosphate detergent sale or usage is
restricted in some areas.
- Sodium orthophosphates
have a wide variety of uses in conventional food processing, but is
currently restricted to dairy products only for organic processing.
- Sodium
tripolyphosphate is used in “wet process” cements sold in powdered form
to aid in their
dispersion when mixing them with water to form a slurry.
- Phosphate rock
production rose 1.5 percent to 168 million tonnes in 2005. The largest
producer was China, while the US, Morocco and Former Soviet Union
countries also achieved significant volumes. Unlike potash, phosphate
remains a tool for job creation and economic development in many
regions.
- While the US remains the world’s largest DAP
producer, capacity has surged in recent years in many countries,
including China and India. It is easy to produce, even with imported
rock, and is popular because of its high nutrient content and excellent
handling qualities.
- Cheese phosphates
were developed as emulsifying agents for processed cheese. Phosphates
achieve longer shelf life for processed cheese than citrates and other
emulsifiers.
Dicalcium Phosphate Anhydrous and Dihydrate and Tricalcium Phosphate
manufactured serve many purposes in food applications.
The main application for food grade phosphoric acid is in the production
of cola beverages. Other applications include production of bakers
yeast, pet foods, cane sugar refining and for setting of jams and
jellies.
- Phosphate
technologies have provided texture, mineral fortification, enhanced
color and flavor to a wide variety of foods, including baked goods,
beverages, cereals, meats, seafood, poultry and
dairy products
- When processing clay,
manufacturers can benefit from
the use of phosphates. They provide dispersant benefits and are
effective deflocculants in kaolin mining.
- Phosphoric acid,
particularly high purity grade has long been used as a reliable and
economical etchant in the manufacture of semiconductors
- Drilling muds are an
important component in oil, mineral and water well drilling. These muds
have
several functions including removal and dispersion of the cuttings,
cooling of the bit, lubrication and support of the walls. A variety of
phosphate salts aid in several of these critical processes.
- A specialized
application experiencing tremendous growth is
electrolytic plating with copper pyrophosphate bath: this bath is used
for the plating of electronic circuit
boards. Phosphate products are an integral part of the chemical
polishing of metal, commonly known as “bright dipping” which gives
polished aluminum its mirror-like finish. Phosphates are also critical
to the production of metal cleaners and are used to cleanse metal prior
to treatment.
- In the petroleum
industry, a number of phosphate products are incorporated as peptizing
and
deflocculating agents in oil well drilling mud. Sodium acid
pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium tripolyphosphate
help control drilling mud viscosity, keeping it low enough to facilitate
pumping. In refining applications, polyphosphoric acid is an important
catalyst in oligomerization, the process by
which crude oil molecules are broken down to create products such as
gasoline.
- Phosphoric acid and
phosphate salts are used in plastic and rubber manufacturing as
additives
to impart a variety of functions. |
