- Tallow is a rendered fat from beef or sheep , after then the
impurities are removed.
- Tallow is carefully regulated as an animal by-product. Tallow is
classified as edible, use in soap, candles, or as animal feed
depending on its purity level.
- Tallow is also rendered from horses, which is a highly
monounsaturated fatty acid, with lesser amount of saturated
polyunsaturated fatty acid.
- Wet rendering is one of the process that produces the purest
form of tallow. Fat is heated in water between 130 and 140 degrees
Fahrenheit.
- During the process, gravity separates the impurities from the
fat, which settle down into the water.
- Nutritional fact about Tallow is that one cup of mutton tallow
provides 1849 calories.
- Mutton tallow can also be used in skin ointments and natural
skin care remedies. It penetrates layers of dead skin, softening the
hard areas on the face.
- These are the manufacturing process of Tallow: Get some fat
first. Cut it as small as possible. Place it in a pot. Keep it on
burner over the lowest heat possible and cover it up. Strain the
fat.
- Tallow has an existing market in conventional oleo chemicals as
a unique feedstock with
properties that are hard to reproduce from plant oils.
- This is one of the best fats for high heat cooking as because it
remains stable even with a high smoke point and we can avoid
generating free radicals.
- Beef tallow is protective against breast tumors. Using beef
tallow will help make bones strong as it has a lot of vitamin D in
it.
- We can find its application in soap making, Candle making and
Biodiesel.
- The present demand for the animal tallow
is estimated at 21,645 tonnes per annum. The
demand of which is expected to reach 36,041 tonnes by the year 2020.
- The production capacity of the tallow
plant is 150 tonnes per year which is based on 300 working days per
year and single shift of (8 hrs) per day. By increasing the number
of working hours per day, we can increase the capacity.
- The total cost of machinery and
equipment is estimated at Birr 5.6 million, out of which Birr 4.48
million is foreign currency.
- The total cost of land, building and civil
works will come around Birr 2.57 million.
- The total annual labour cost is Birr
168,750. The cost of training is estimated at Birr 25,000.
- The total investment cost of the tallow
project including working capital is estimated at Birr 9.5
million, of which 17 % will be required in foreign currency.
- The annual production cost at full
operation capacity is estimated at Birr 2.54 million. The material
and utility cost accounts for 43.41 per cent, while repair and
maintenance will be around 3.94% of the production cost.
- A recent analysis of the Australian
feedstock market
for ARF concluded that ‘a long-term tallow feedstock price of $481
per tonne is on a
reasonable basis which is to conduct long-term financial
projections’.
- The full capital cost of a feedstock
capacity of 70,000 tonnes per year is likely to
cost $20-30 million.
- About 120,000 tonnes of tallow are
exported from New Zealand annually and could be used as feedstock.
- The unit capital cost of smaller
plants, with capacities less than 10,000 tonnes per year, and the
capability to be associated with sources of tallow or oil
production, will be 2 to 4 times higher.
