- Feldspar is a common raw material used
in glassmaking, ceramics, and to some extent as a filler and
extender in paint, plastics, and rubber. In glassmaking, alumina
from feldspar improves product hardness, durability, and resistance
to chemical corrosion. In ceramics, the alkalis in feldspar (calcium
oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium oxide) act as a flux, lowering
the melting temperature of a mixture. Fluxes melt at an early stage
in the firing process, forming a glassy matrix that bonds the other
components of the system together. In the US, about 66% of feldspar
is consumed in glassmaking, including glass containers and glass
fiber. Ceramics (including electrical insulators, sanitary ware,
pottery, tableware, and tile) and other uses, such as fillers,
accounted for the remainder.
- Feldspar is ground to about 20 mesh
for glassmaking and to 200 mesh or finer for most ceramic and filler
applications
- Feldspar and nepheline syenite are not
recycled by producers; however, glass container producers use cullet
(recycled container glass), thereby reducing feldspar and nepheline
syenite consumption
- The leading feldspar-producing
countries in 2015 were estimated to be Turkey and Italy, followed by
China, India, and Thailand, in descending order of estimated
production
- The global feldspar market is
projected to reach 25.6 Mt by 2022, driven primarily by the recovery
in the world construction industry and rising demand for glass and
ceramic products
- In case of Feldspar, the ceramic
industry accounts for 84% of its domestic consumption. In the
ceramic tile & sanitary ware industry, Feldspar is the second most
important ingredient after clay
- The Board of Indian
Council of Ceramic Tiles & Sanitary ware is demanding a ban on the
export of two minerals Feldspar & Quartz from India
- In India, Over 30% of the overall
production of Feldspar being exported out of the country. Such huge
quantum of export of the raw material, fearfully, could cause a
rapid depletion of the natural resource for domestic industry’s
consumption. This could create a panic scenario for key Indian
sectors like ceramics tiles & sanitary ware which requires Feldspar
as a critical raw material in their manufacturing processes
- About 21.5 million tonnes of feldspar
were estimated to have been produced globally in 2014, mostly by
three countries: Turkey (5.0
Mt), Italy (4.7 Mt), and China (2.1 Mt). The world feldspar trade is
estimated to be worth between $US1.6 and $1.8 Billion.
Included in the world production of feldspar is an estimated annual
production of about 4.3 Mt of high potassium feldspar (K-spar)
that commands a premium price.
The worldwide market for feldspar is projected to reach 25.6 million
tonnes by 2022, driven primarily by the growing global
focus on solar energy. Consequently, the production of solar glass
used in solar cells is expected to spur consumption of feldspar.
- Feldspar is a major export item that
comes within the top 20 exports from India to Bangladesh, as there
is no feldspar deposits in Bangladsh
- 62% of the feldspar production of
feldspar in India is from Rajasthan
