- Blood bag is a
disposable bio-medical device used for collection, storage,
transportation and transfusion of human blood and blood components. The
system consists of a single or multiple bag connecting with tubing,
needle, needle cover, clamp etc. The blood bags are made of plastic
material which are compatible with blood.
- In recent times,
blood bags have become a conspicuous item and essential need of
hospitals and nursing homes to meet blood infusion emergencies. Blood
bags are most ostensibly serving the medical field in crucial hour. As
the number of hospitals, nursing homes are increasing, the demand for
the blood bags too is increasing tremendously
- The blood bags are
fabricated by high frequency welding technique. Sized PVC sheets are
placed between electrodes and high frequency at high voltage is applied.
PVC gets heated very rapidly and sealing takes place between electrodes.
Transfusion ports, donor and transfer tubing’s are then kept in
appropriate position with the bag and welded to form integral part of
the blood bag system. Welded bags are trimmed. Clamps and needle
coverings are fixed on the tubing’s. After inspection the acceptable
bags are sent to labelling section

Limited manufactures and markets a range of PVC bags for blood
transfusions and infusion solutions. Blood bags are made from imported,
medical grade PVC granules & sheets in Class 10000 Clean room
environments.
- Transfusion blood
bags were inoculated with less than 0.1 colony-forming units (CFU) of
Yersinia enterocolitica (serotypes O:3, O:5, and O:9) and Yersinia
pseudotuberculosis I per mL and stored at 4 degrees C for 41 days.
During storage, samples were collected periodically and colony counts of
serial dilutions were performed by plating on tryptic soy
agar.
- After a lag-phase,
the growth of Yersinia species from less than 0.1 CFU per mL to 10(9)
CFU per mL was observed in 3 of 10 bags.The data showed that prolonged
storage of contaminated blood bags allows Y. enterocolitica and Y.
pseudotuberculosis to multiply to high levels.
- The freezing bag has
been designed to assure a homogenous, controlled freezing rate for
maximum cell viability. The design simultaneously reduces the
possibility of bag breakage from thermal, dynamic or expansion
forces.
- Blood bags contain
an anticoagulant solution and a red blood cell preservative solution,
and are used in blood banks which both collect donor blood and separate
blood components. Probitas Pharma has incorporated leukocyte-reduction
filters in its blood bags to prevent leukocyte related adverse effects.
