Project at a Glance |
Contents on the CD ROM |
- Fibroin is a type of protein
created by Bombyx mori (silkworms) in the production of silk.
- It is a promising scaffold
material for ligament because it is a strong biocompatible protein-based
polymer that exhibits slow degradation rates.
- Its films composed of silk I
structure were first prepared by slow drying process.
- Raw materials of fibroin is
silk.
- It can be spun at rates as
fast as 10 ml/hr using this electrospinning method as well as it will be
extracted from the cocoons of Bombyx mori silkworms.
- The domesticated silkworm
Bombyx mori silk fibroin consist of two proteins they are a light
chain and heavy chain which are present in
a 1:1 ratio and
linked by a single disulfide bond.
- As a fibrous protein, silk
fibroin (SF) fibres from Bombyx mori have been
used as a biomedical
suture material as a long time. because of their
outstanding mechanical properties, in contrast with the catalytic and
recognition functions of globular proteins.
- The degummed silk fibroin
was dried at 40 C and atmospheric pressure. Silk fibroin micro- and
nanoparticles were obtained in water-miscible organic solvents.
- Silk fibroin film was
prepared by casting 2 wt.% SF solution in flat-bottomed polystyrene
dishes at room temperature in a flow cabinet.
- Silk fibroin is an
amphiphilic block co-polymer with the molecular mass of the dominant
high molecular weight protein of 390 KDa.
- The variability demonstrates
the sensitivity of silk fibroin to sample manipulation &necessitated
measurements on a large number of independently prepared samples in
order to extract the general features of silk fibroin gelation.
- It has mainly been applied
to wound healing, successfully performing as man-made blood-vessels ,
surgical sutures and repair materials.
