- Storage is the
most important aspect of food supply chain that ensures food
security and round-the-year quality food supply of a country.
According to World Bank Report, the food grains and perishables
wasted dueto improper storage could be sufficient to feed one
third of world poor population.
- A Silo is a
structure for storing bulk materials Materials such as food
grains, cement, wood chips, coal, and several others can be
stored in a silo. Silos keep the grainssafer for longer period
and used the less area but provide higher capacity
- Three types of
silos are in widespread use these days that are: tower silos,
bunker silos, and bag silos.
- Shortage of
food storage has been one of the biggest reasons behind the
wastage of food grains in India. The country grows enough food
grains to meet the needs of its entire population, yet is unable
to feed millions of them
- Steel silos
that are state-of-the-art food godowns used for grain storage
will be constructed in the country for a capacity of 100 LMT on
a Public Private Partnership basis
- Foreign
development finance company, is planning to invest $45 million
- The proposed
funding will be used to finance the construction of new steel
silos for the storage and preservation of staple food products
such as wheat and rice
- India’s
commodity storage market is highly under-developed.
Approximately 80% of the country’s 118 million tons of storage
capacity is controlled by government agencies where inventory
controls are weak and testing is inconsistent and often
inaccurate. A further 15% of capacity is controlled by
unorganized players such as private warehouse owners or the
farmers themselves where controls and testing are likely to be
even weaker or non-existent
- It is predicted
that commodity storage and management will also be increasingly
privatized in India
- The grain
storage silos market is expected to register a CAGR of 5.6%
during the forecast period (2019 2024).
North America is the biggest and the leadingregion in using
grain storage silos.
