- In India,
approximately 707 million metric tons/year plastic products are
manufactured, majority of the plastics material goes to
packaging applications
- As per the
study conducted by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in 60
major cities of India, it has been observed that around 4059
T/day of plastic waste is generated from these cities
- There are two
categories of
plastics available in the market — biodegrable bioplastics and
non-biodegradable bioplastics.
- The bioplastics
market growth is because of the need for more eco-friendly and
less polluting materials.
- Poly Lactic
Acid can be produced chemically and biotechnologically but
biotechnological routes are mostly favored because of
environmental concerns and limited nature of petrochemical
feedbacks. Worldwide efforts have been made for the
production of lactic acid and PLA with good yield and low cost
management
- Considering the
various merits of the PLA a in the light of the global warming
potential due to CO2 emission it can be concluded that PLA could
be a better packaging material because it is renewable
- The pure PLA
films and modified PLA films were prepared by extrusion blow
molding
- Elongation at
break, water vapor permeability and Oxygen permeability of
modified PLA files were greatly improved.
- PLA can be
easily processed on standard plastics equipment to yield molded
parts, film, fibers bags
- The PLA bags
have the advantage of degrading as quickly as the paper bags.
PLA also retains some of the important
characteristics of poly trash bags such as water resistance and
plasto-elasticity, unlike paper
- PLA is expected
to be the largest segment, in terms of volume, in 2015 with a
market share of more than 45.1% of the total biodegradable
plastics market. PLA is also expected to grow at the
second-fastest rate among all the types of biodegradable
plastics. The growth of PLA is expected to be driven by its
superior mechanical properties and ease of processability. In
terms of value, starch blends are expected to account for the
largest share in the market during the forecast period. This is
due to the comparative high cost of starch blends to PLA.
