Water must meet a variety of safety, quality and environmental standards. These include pH, colour, conductivity, alkalinity/acidity, anions, cations, chromium 6+, cyanide, chemical and biological oxygen demand (COD/BOD), total organic carbon (TOC) etc. One means of establishing and assuring the purity and safety of water is to set a standard for various contaminants. A standard is a definite rule, principle, or measurement which is established by governmental authority. Turbidity and colour are the most common physical variables that need to be addressed during the treatment process.The necessary coagulant dose is directly related to the amount of turbidity or colour to be removed. The design of treatment plants must pay attention to several points when colour or turbidity of the raw water are high. The plant must have a large capacity for coagulant storage, supply and dosing; very good initial mixing of the coagulant and raw water must be achieved; and other factors must be considered relating specifically to colour and turbidity. Alkalinity represents the buffering capacity of water and its ability to resist a change in pH. Alken-Murray recommends alkalinity above 75 mg/L to offset acid produced by bacteria nitrifying ammonia.
