- The Pomegranate, Punica granatum, is a species of
fruit -
bearing deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 5-8 m tall.
- The genus Punica only has two species: P. granatum L. and
P. Nana L., the former mainly cultivated for its fruit and
occasionally as an ornamental tree, and the latter only ornamentally
as its fruits are inedible.
- The origin of the pomegranate tree is the Mediterranean basin and
the Middle East.
- The fruit is a fleshy berry denominated balausta, thick-skinned,
complex, enclosed by the thallus, with various polyspermal cavities
separated by tenuous membranous partitions.
- Pomegranates are a great source of natural antioxidants, which can
play a big part in keeping your cardiovascular system pumping
efficiently.
- Pomegranates are high in polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols
in pomegranate are hydrolysable tannins, particularly punicalagins.
- The bark of the pomegranate tree may be used as a very strong laxans
(purgative), but it has several serious side-effects.

One medium apple-sized pomegranate provides about 105
calories.

It has 26 grams carbohydrate, is a good source of
potassium has some vitamin C (9 milligrams) and fiber (0.9
grams) as well as small amounts of several other vitamins and
minerals.

The EU, mostly the UK, is the main market for fresh
separated pomegranate arils at the price of 10& per Kg.
- Juice prices are very high since it is a gourmet product at the
lowest level of US$ 5 per litter.
