- In conventional
paper cups they are coated with PE (Polyethylene) derived from
oil, to make board waterproof. Cups coated in PLA (Polylatic
acid) the plastic is derived from plants, so both the board and
the coating are derived from fully renewable sources.

- Plastic-coated
paper products include milk and juice cartons, hot and cold
paper drinking cups, frozen food containers, plastic-lined paper
bags, take-out containers and some paper plates.
- The problem
with plastic coatings such as PE coated products is what happens
to the product after use when it enters disposal environment
- PE is not
biodegradable and is not completely assimilated by
micro-organisms in the compost system
- Polylactide (PLA)
is the most studied and easily available biobased and
bio-degradable polymer. As such PLA would
be a good candidate to be coated on to paper for complete
compost ability at the end of life.
- PLA properties
can be tailored to be coatable and still meet the ASTM D6868
- PLA-based
coatings can be successfully processed on traditional PE lines
when modifications are made to the formulation
- PLA-based
coated paper provides water-proofing and grease resistance that
is competitive with a PE coated paper.
- The PLA used
for paper cups has been treated to enable it to withstand the
temperature of hot drinks.
