- During the reaction of phosphate ore and sulphuric acid, silicon
tetrafluoride (SiF4) and HF are formed as byproducts. These gases
are usually scrubbed with water, forming fluorosilicic acid, H2SiF6
(FSA) as a waste stream.
- Fluorosilicic acid contain 90% reactive silica that can be
recovered and can be reused
- Current uses of Fluorosilicic acid are production of aluminium
fluoride, Metal Fluosilicates, Drinking water fluorination,
preservation of timber, disinfection of brewery equipment, Concrete
hardening and insecticides
- The first attempts to develop a process that directly reacts FSA
with sulphuric acid has been researched and many
patents have been filed The production of AHF from FSA has now been
commercialized and since
2008, plants are operating and the by product is Silica
