  • Silica gel is a granular, porous form of silica made synthetically from sodium silicate. Despite the name, silica gel is a solid. Silica gel is most commonly encountered in everyday life as beads packed in a semi-permeable plastic. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control local humidity in order to avoid spoilage of some goods. Because of poisonous dopants and their very high absorption of moisture, silica gel packets usually bear warnings for the user not to eat the contents, but to throw them away instead.
  • Silicon is the fourteenth element of the periodic table and is a Group IVA element, along with carbon germanium, tin and lead. Pure silicon is a dark gray solid with the same crystalline structure as diamond. Its chemical and physical properties are similar to this material. Silicon has a melting point of 2570° F, a boiling point of 4271° F, and a density of 2.33 g/cm3.When silicon is heated it reacts with the halogens to form halides. It reacts with certain metals to form silicides and when heated in an electric furnace with carbon, a wear resistant ceramic called silicon carbide is produced.
  • The colloidal silica has very different stabilizing by it’s own pH degree. In general the higher the concent- ration or the smaller the particle size, the greater the effect of change of pH. The silica sols are extraordinarily stable at pH 2 where the zeta potential is zero and become increasingly sensitive to electrolytes at higher pH. The particles in colloidal silica are stable above the pH 8 that is to be seen right fig. Most of SILIFOG® S are stands between 9 and 10.5, it means all of SILIFOG® S are stable in constructionally. The SILIFOG® AC is stable as pH 2 , it’s the one and only as a acidity production.
  • Silica was extracted from rice hulls by three processing routes, starting with acid treatment followed by burning and milling. The amorphous white silica powder showed a surface area of 260 to 480 m2/g, purity above 99% and average particle size of 2.0 to 0.6 mm. This silica is suitable for the preparation of mullite whiskers employing the rare earth aluminosilicate glass technique. Due to its highly pozzolanic reaction, this prepared silica is used as an additive in high performance concrete.
  • Silicon metal is made from the reaction of silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2) and carbon materials like coke, coal and wood chips. Silica is typically received in the form of metallurgical grade gravel. This gravel is 99.5% silica, and is 3 x 1 or 6 x 1 in (8 x 3 cm or 15 x 3 cm) in size. The coal is usually of low ash content (1-3% to minimize calcium, aluminum, and iron impurities), contains around 60% carbon, and is sized to match that of the gravel. Wood chips are usually hardwood of 1/2 x 1/8 inch size (1 x. 3 cm size). All materials are received as specified by the manufacturer.
  • The basic process heats silica and coke in a submerged electric arc furnace to high temperatures. High temperatures are required to produce a reaction where the oxygen is removed, leaving behind silicon. This is known as a reduction process. In this process, metal carbides usually form first at the lower temperatures. As silicon is formed, it displaces the carbon. Refining processes are used to improve purity.
  • Colloidal silica polishing suspensions are unique because they provide both a dispersing action as well as a chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) action. It is effective as an additive for the intermediate diamond polishing of metals and is also the best polishing abrasive for eliminating subsurface and surface damage in ceramics because of its CMP polishing action.
  • Unimin Corp. of the United States, is the largest producer of silica in Quebec. Silica is mined from a quartzite deposit at Saint Donat and from a sandstone deposit at Saint Canut. Most of the silica produced by Unimin Limited originates from Saint Canut where the ore is crushed, screened and beneficiated by magnetic separation. The production capacity of the Saint Canut plant is about 550 000 t/y of finished products. Most of Unimin’s output is used in the production of glass containers, flat glass, fibreglass, and in the silicon carbide industries.
  • In 2000, Canada imported 13.1% less silica compounds compared to 1999. Imports fell from 444 171 t to 392 743 t even though their value increased from $95 million to $102.9 million. Imports from the United States come from loosely consolidated and easily processed sandstones or lake sand deposits located near the Great Lakes. Major U.S. operations are located in the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana.
  • Atlantic Silica Inc. mines a large unconsolidated high-grade (+99% SiO2) silica deposit near Sussex. The company produces lump silica and silica sand of various sizes. Fine sand products are sold in the Maritimes, Quebec, and the northeastern United States for use in sandblasting, filter sand, traction sand, cement and concrete manufacturing, refractory use and decorative sand, and as a flux for ase-metal smelters; the sand could also be used in glassmaking.
  • Canadian silica production (shipments) seems to have reached a high in 1994 and a reprieve in 1998, but has maintained a slight decline since then. Production in Alberta has increased progressively since 1994 while production in Quebec since 1995 and in Ontario since 1996 has remained relatively flat.
  • In 1995, imports of silica sand for use in foundries were 373 596 t valued at $12.03 million; in 1992 they were 315 191 t valued at $5.89 million, while in 1990 they were 589 162 t valued at $8.99 million. In 1995, imports of silica sand for use in glassmaking were 189 841 t valued at $2.94 million; in 1992 they were 101 230 t valued at $0.995 million and in 1990 they were 152 028 t valued at $1.49 million.
  • Electronic applications accounted for most industrial uses of quartz crystal; other uses included special optical applications
  • Virtually all quartz crystal used for electronics was cultured rather than natural crystal.
  • Electronic-grade quartz crystal was essential for making filters, frequency controls, and timers in electronic circuits employed for a wide range of products, such as communications equipment, computers, and many consumer goods, such as electronic games and television receivers
  • Limited resources of natural quartz crystal suitable for direct electronic or optical use are available throughout
the world. World dependence on these resources will continue to decline because of the increased acceptance of cultured quartz crystal as an alternative material; however, use of cultured quartz crystal will
mean an increased dependence on lascas for growing cultured quartz
  • Quartz crystal is the best material for frequency-control oscillators and frequency filters
in electronic circuits. Other materials, such as aluminum orthophosphate (the very rare mineral berlinite), langasite, lithium niobate, and lithium tantalate, which have larger piezoelectric coupling constants, have been studied and used. The cost competitiveness of these materials, as opposed to cultured quartz crystal, is dependent on the type of application the material is used for and the processing required
