- An abrasive is a
material, often a mineral, that is used to shape or finish a workpiece
through rubbing which leads to part of the workpiece being worn
away.
- Abrasive materials used
in blasting can generally be classified as sand, slag, metallic shot or
grit, synthetic, or other.
- The abrasives industry
is composed of approximately 400 companies engaged in the following
separate types of manufacturing: abrasive grain manufacturing, bonded
abrasive product manufacturing, and coated abrasive product
manufacturing.
- The process description
is broken into three distinct segments discussed in the following
sections: production of the abrasive grains, production of bonded
abrasive products, and production of coated abrasive products.
- The raw materials vised
are abrasive grains of Aluminium Oxide, Silicon Carbide and Zirconia of
grit size of 8 to 1200.
- Abrasive blasting is
the use of abrasive material to clean or texturize a material such as
metal or masonry.
- Abrasives today are,
more and more, precision-manufactured substances, but natural abrasives
still have a strong position.
- Abrasives are extremely
commonplace and are used very extensively in a wide variety of
industrial, domestic, and technological applications.
- Common uses for
abrasives include grinding, polishing, buffing, honing, cutting,
drilling, sharpening, and sanding .
- Today abrasives are
used in a number of different industries and the actual physical and
chemical composition of them will vary from one industry to the
next.
- The most common type of
abrasive that is used for industrial purposes is the diamond. This
particular abrasive not only occurs naturally but can also be
synthetically produced.
- The Indian abrasives
market has grown at a rate of about 2-3% in the past 5 years and is
expected to grow at 8-10% annually.
- Growth in demand for
bonded abrasives is likely to be about 12% and that in coated abrasives
is likely to be about 10-12%.
- The demand for coated
abrasives is likely to grow in the future mainly because of the larger
productivities that are possible.
