- The chemical
composition of mould powders, particularly the percentage shares
of calcium and silicon oxides affect the alkalinity of a mould
slag. The alkalinity of slag affects therefore its physical
properties, especially the refraction temperature and viscosity.
- Continuous
casting (CC) mould powder is used primarily to facilitate the
passage of steel through the mould. It is also known by names
such as casting powder, mould powder and mould flux. CC mould
powder plays an important role in the continuous casting of
liquid steels. It is one of the most critical and influential
factors for smooth continuous casting of the liquid steel. CC
mould powder is sprayed at the top of the liquid steel in the
mould either manually or by automatic feeders
- Basic know-how
of casting powder
technology is empirical, i.e., based on trial-and-error method
- Technology of
continuous casting powder derives directly from development of
powder for ingot casting
- Heating
microscope is essential to fully understand the observed
behavior of mould powders, that strongly depends on the heating
cycle applied. Heating Microscope flash mode enables the user to
instantaneously heat/cool a specimen to a pre-set temperature,
hence replicating actual process conditions and characterizing
mould powders
behavior during continuous casting process.
- Fly ashes were
not characterized by stable chemical composition, thus a
homogeneous quality and performance of products could not be
assured using them as raw material
- Synthetic
casting powders using quartz sand, Portland cement, calcium
oxide, calcined bauxite etc
- These products
led an increased final product stability compared to fly ash
based powders but had lesser spread ability due to different
mineralogical structure
