- Titanium dioxide, also
known as titanium(IV) oxide or titania, is the naturally occurring oxide
of titanium, chemical formula TiO2. When used as a pigment, it is called
titanium white, Pigment White 6, or CI 77891. Titanium dioxide is a
colorless solid at room temperature, melts at 1830 oC, and boils between
2500 and 3000 oC.
- Titanium dioxide occurs
in four forms:
rutile, a tetragonal mineral usually of prismatic
habit, often twinned. anatase or octahedrite, a tetragonal mineral of
dipyramidal habit; brookite, an orthorrhombic mineral. Both anatase
and bookite are relatively rare minerals;Titanium dioxide (B) or Tio2, a
monoclinic mineral.
- Titanium dioxide
occurrences in nature are never pure; it is found with contaminant
metals such as iron. The oxides can be mined and serve as a source for
commercial titanium. The metal can also be mined from other minerals
such as ilmenite or leucoxene ores, or one of the purest forms, rutile
beach sand.
- In spite of being
colourless in the massive state titanium dioxide is an extremely
effective white pigment when it is finely divided. TiO2 absorbs almost
no incident light in the visible region of the spectrum. The light is
either transmitted and refracted through the crystal or reflected at the
interfaces.
- The oldest production
process for titanium dioxide is the sulfate process. The major
difference between the chloride and the chloride-ilmenite process is the
process feed stock. The two main titanium bearing minerals sources that
are used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide are ilmenite
and rutile. The most abundant titanium bearing mineral is ilmenite and
is comprised of approximately 43 to 65 percent titanium dioxide.
- As a semiconductor,
TiO2 functions by having a large band gap, which can be described as an
energy threshold that electrons must obtain in order to flow through a
material. The band gap is located between the filled valence band, and
the higher energy conduction band. The magnitude between the
electronically occupied valence band and the largely unpopulated
conduction band determines both the extent of thermal population of the
conduction band and the wavelength sensitivity of the semiconductor to
irradiation.
- Titanium dioxide is a
well-known photocatalyst for water and air treatment as well as for
catalytic production of gases. The general scheme for the photocatalytic
destruction of organics begins with its excitation by suprabandgap
photons, and continues through redox reactions where OH radicals, formed
on the photocatalyst surface, play a major role.
- More than 50 percent of
the titanium dioxide produced is used in paints, varnishes and lacquer.
In paints, titanium dioxide is used primarily to whiten and opacify
polymeric binder systems. Even medium to deep shades usually contain
some titanium dioxide. It also is used in coatings where exterior
durability is needed.
- More than 25 percent of
the titanium dioxide produced is used in paper and paperboard. The paper
industry uses titanium dioxide in two different applications: as a
direct addition to whiten and opacify the paper stock, and in the
manufacture of coatings that are applied to the paper product. Titanium
dioxide also is used in the manufacture of many other products including
printing inks, rubber, floor coverings, ceramics, food and
pharmaceuticals.
- The plastics market for
Ti02 grew by 5-6% in the 1990s. The plastics market, which uses Ti02 as
pigments, opacifiers and UV stabilisers in polyethylene, polypropylene
and PVC, is also expected to show by 2007 the highest growth rate,
though by a lower average of 2.9%. The Economics of Titanium Minerals
and Pigments predicts that with an average growth of 3.5% per year, the
Asia-Pacific market will be stronger than the worldwide average.
- Kemira's only
production plant for titanium dioxide pigments is at Meri-Pori near
Mantyluoto harbor. More than 95 percent of the titanium dioxide made at
the plant is exported. Leading ink manufacturers worldwidee now use
Kemira pigments specially in products intended for coating various
special packaging types such as drink cans.
- China is the world’s
fastest-growing titanium dioxide market and the second largest country
for total titanium dioxide consumption. It is currently consuming
approximately 650,000 tonnes per year of titanium, and is a net importer
of titanium dioxide. In line with the anticipated massive expansion in
titanium dioxide consumption, DuPont recently announced plans for a
world-class titanium dioxide plant for the city of Donying in China , to
have an annual capacity of 200,000 tons. DuPont’s total investment will
exceed US$1 billion.
