- Wire drawing is a
manufacturing process used to reduce or change the diameter of a wire or
rod by pulling the wire or rod through a single or series of drawing
die(s).
- During the wire
drawing process, no material is shaved off, the wire simply gets longer.
The material is cold-worked and hardens (and also increases in tensile
strength) through each step.
- The process of wire
drawing involves the production of wire of close diameter and tolerance
by drawing descaled hot-rolled rod through a die. The finished wire is
coiled onto a motor driven block. The dies are manufactured from hard
material e.g tungsten carbide. Diamonds dies are used for small diameter
wire. Soap is used for lubrication. If large diameter reductions are
required the rod is progressively drawn through several stages of dies
and blocks.
- Wire drawing like
any cold working of metals such as iron, copper or aluminium increases
the hardness, stiffness and elastic limits.
- The process of wire
drawing under hydrodynamic friction is simulated by a liquid flow whose
viscosity is a linear function of pressure.
- The industry's
revenue for the year 2007 was approximately $4.7 billion USD, with an
estimated gross profit of 27.32%. Import was valued at $1.8 billion USD
from 61 countries.
- The industry also
exported $421.0 million USD worth of merchandise to 131 countries.
Adding import value to and subtracting export value from the industry's
shipment value, the total domestic demand for the industry in 2007 was
$6.1 billion USD.
