Information profile @ a Glance
- Polystyrene (PS) can be divided into three varieties: , high-impact
polystyrene (HIPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
- GPPS is a transparent crystalloid with many specifications depending
on its molecular weight. HIPS usually contains 5% -8% of elastomer to
enhance its impact strength. EPS is made by combining the polystyrene
and an physical foaming agent (usually pentane), and used to produce
goblets, snack cases, insulated packaging,
- Polystyrene is used to make many types of containers such as
videocassette cases, compact disk jewel boxes, tableware (forks, knives
and spoons), and cafeteria trays. A foamed form of polystyrene is used
to make coffee cups, grocery store meat trays, and building insulation
- Polystyrene is produced when the styrene monomer is polymerised into
long chains.A gas called pentane is used as a non-CFC expansion agent to
blow polystyrene into its final lightweight, expanded cellular form.
- Thermocol sheets are commonly known by the trade name Styrofoam
- Polystyrene, like other plastics is non‐biodegradable
- Polystyrene is an immediate danger to the destruction of the ozone
layer, adds to the already existing danger of the greenhouse effect,
amounts to approximately five percent of the United States landfills,
and is a danger to humans and animals health;
