- Colloidal silicas are found in fields as
diverse as catalysis, metallurgy, electronics, glass, ceramics, paper
and pulp technology, optics, elastomers , food, health care and
industrial chromatography
- Commercial colloidal silicas are commonly available
in the form of sols or powders. The powders can be xerogels, dry
precipitates, aerogels, aerosols, or dried and calcined coacervates. The
ultimate unit for all of them is a silica particle, the size of which
determines the specific surface area of the product
- A stable dispersion of solid colloidal particles in a liquid is
called a sol. Stable in this case means that the solid particles do not
settle or agglomerate at a significant rate. If the liquid is water, the
dispersion is known as an aquasol or hydrosol.
- Commercial colloidal silicas are produced by many
companies both in the Americas, in Europe, and in
Japan as dispersions in water or organic solvents
- The processes for producing colloidal silica use the low-cost sodium
silicate solutions as main raw material. These methods include dialysis
, electro dialysis , acid neutralization peptization and ion exchange
- Colloidal silica prepared from silicon by direct oxidation has a
monodispersed spherical shape
and purity control with reasonable prices. It generates less waste water
because it can be directly produced in relatively high concentrations
- A careful comparison of colloidal silica and the preparation methods
may help in choosing the proper colloidal silica that is the most
appropriate for the application being considered.
