- Titanium is a chemical element
with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a light, strong,
lustrous, corrosion-resistant transition metal with a grayish
color.
- It is widely distributed and
occurs primarily in the minerals anatase, brookite, ilmenite,
perovskite, rutile, titanite (sphene), as well in many iron
ores.
- Titanium, when pure, is a
lustrous, white metal. It has a low density, good strength, is easily
fabricated, and has excellent corrosion resistance.
- The two most useful properties of
the metal form are corrosion resistance, and the highest
strength-to-weight ratio of any metal
- Titanium is obtained from various
ores that occur naturally on the earth. The primary ores used for
titanium production include ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile.
- Titanium is produced using the
Kroll process. The steps involved include extraction, purification,
sponge production, alloy creation, and forming and shaping.
- The Armstrong process produces
titanium by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride through reaction
with sodium.
- The new processing technique could
reduce the amount of energy required and the cost to make titanium parts
from powders by up to 50 percent, making it feasible to use titanium
alloys for brake rotors, artificial joint replacements and armor for
military vehicles.
- Titanium can be alloyed with iron,
aluminium, vanadium, molybdenum, among other elements, to produce strong
lightweight alloys for aerospace , military, industrial process ,
sporting goods, jewelry, mobile phones, and other
applications.
- Titanium is used in steel as an
alloying element (ferro-titanium) to reduce grain size and as a
deoxidizer, and in stainless steel to reduce carbon content
- Titanium has potential use in
desalination plants for converting sea water into fresh water.
- Future advances in titanium
manufacture are likely to be found in the area of improved ingot
production, the development of new alloys, the reduction in production
costs, and the application to new industries.
- Asia is the fastest growing market
with projections of future growth rates of 6-7%/year.
- Titanium dioxide is seeing growing
demand in photo catalysts due to its oxidative and hydrolysis
properties.
- Gross world consumption of
titanium mineral concentrates increased by 3% compared with that of
2004, and production increased by 8%.
- Increased demand for titanium used
in titanium metal and steel production exceeded the available supply of
scrap and production capacity for new metal.
- The foregoing results indicate
that a large measure of protection against caries can be provided by
making a single, annual, one minute application of a 1% aqueous solution
of titanium tetrafluoride to the teeth of children.
