  • Potash (or carbonate of potash) is an impure form of potassium carbonate mixed with other potassium salts. The element potassium derives its english name form potash. A number of chemical compounds containing potassium use the word Potash in their traditional names are Potash fertilizer, Caustic Potash, Carbonate of Potash, Chlorate of Potash, Muriate of Potash, Nitrate of Potash and Sulphate of potash.
  • Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.
  • The Processing of Potash includes Comminution, Scrubbing and desliming, conditioning, heavy media, Ptash flotation, Centrifuging and product drying, Classification and Compaction, Crystallization, Recoveries.
  • Potash is responsible for the transport mechanisms in the plant whereby materials made by photosynthesis in the leaf can be moved to other parts of the plant for growth, formation of seed and deposition of oil. It is vital in the water regulation of the plant and plays an important balancing role with nitrogen to ensure healthy, vigorous growth and natural resistance to disease, pests and stress.
  • Most potassium (95 %) goes into fertilizers and the rest goes mainly into making potassium hydroxide (KOH), by the electrolysis of potassium chloride solution, and then converting this to potassium carbonate (K2CO3). Potassium carbonate goes into glass manufacture, expecially the glass used to make televisions, while potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soaps and detergents. A little potassium chloride goes into pharmaceuticals, medical drips and saline injections. Other potassium salts are used in baking, photography and tanning leather, and to make iodize salts.
  • Potassium can be found in vegetables, fruit, potatoes, meat, bread, milk and nuts. It plays an important role in the physical fluid system of humans and it assists nerve functions.
  • According to the Canadian Fertilizer Institute, the world potash production for the year 2000 amounted to 42.3 Mt KCl. Saskatchewan’s share of world’s production for the same year was about 13.0 Mt KCl, about one-third of the total. Potash mining in Saskatchewan generates $1.6 billion dollars in gross revenues, equivalent to $251 million dollars in wages and benefits, employing 3,400 workers directly or through contractors. The major share of the potash produced in Saskatchewan goes for export. The US is the major consumer with 52% of the total, another 43% goes to overseas markets and only a mere 5% is used in Canada.
  • EU markets are a major concern to us. Over the last ten years, potash consumption in the old EU-15 has gradually declined as a result of the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This contrasts with trends in potash demand in East European markets, though total use in these nations is lower than in the old EU-15. Since 2000, potash demand in Eastern Europe has steadily increased in line
    with world consumption.
  • Indian Potash was investing over Rs 50 crore in the ports in Chennai, Tuticorin and Mundra to strengthen its fertiliser handling and storage facilities. The company's turnover in 2004-05 was Rs 3,288 crore when it handled over 37.12 lakh tonnes of fertilisers. In the current year, its turnover was expected to exceed Rs 4,000 crore, he said.Indian Potash was floated as a joint stock company to import and distribute Muriate of Potash.
  • As the population of the world increase, the food is in great demand and consequently fertilizer/ potash is in grate demand. Companies world over, are attempting to take over potash resources and companies
  • Recent development of the Australian mining giant attempting to take over the world's largest phosphate mining company is well known to everyone by now
